Ouarzazat at the confluence? of the Atlas, Draa, and Dades Valleys, has always been strategically important, evidenced by the huge Taourirt Kasbah at its heart. Like so many other places, the town really only came into being in the 1920s when the French made it an administrative center and garrison town, which remains until today.
